Every day of our lives, the truth is that we are always at risk for an unplanned injury – no matter how careful you are or what steps you take to prevent accidents. When you live life hard, playing physically demanding sports or engaging in high-risk recreational activities, you knowingly place yourself at a greater chance of injury than others who live quieter lives. However, since the future is unpredictable, significant accidents can happen to anyone, even cautious people. And when they do, it’s essential for you to be prepared and understand your next logical steps.
Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), occurs when an individual experiences an incredible physical head impact that damages the tissue and blood vessels of the brain. You may suffer several terrible symptoms such as mental health issues, lack of coordination, vertigo, loss of attention span and focus, blurred or pained vision, headache, emotional dysregulation, and memory loss or damage.
When concussion is suspected, you must report your symptoms to our highly experienced physicians as soon as possible. Treatment is simple but must begin immediately after diagnosis. Once you have been diagnosed with a concussion, you will be required to limit all activity including both physical and mental while your brain recovers.
To treat concussions, our physicians typically apply ice to the area where the trauma occurred to slow down any swelling. You’ll need to continue icing on and off at home for a period of time to be determined by one of our doctors. If the impact has left your brain gasping for air, you may also be required to wear an oxygen mask while your body recovers.
Head injuries must be taken very seriously. If you do not seek concussion treatment or follow through with the treatment recommendations, you put yourself at risk for further and permanent brain damage.
