A 15-vehicle pileup occurred on Interstate 10 east of El Paso, one of multiple traffic accidents in the region Sunday due to snow and ice.
The Texas Department of Transportation reported several traffic accidents on Interstate 10 from El Paso east to the I-10 and I-20 split.
Whiteout conditions were reported on I-20 between Odessa and Pecos, the Texas Department of Transportation in Odessa said in a tweet.
Crashes caused major delays and closed some roads. Travel was not advised.
The 15-vehicle collision occurred Sunday morning on I-10 West at mile marker 50 near Tornillo, according to a El Paso Police Department tweet.
There was another crash involving three semitrucks on I-10 West at mile marker 145 in Hudspeth County.
There was also a crash on I-10 West at the Paisano Drive on ramp in Central El Paso.
Snow and ice were also reported on I-10 between Vado and the Anthony area at the Texas-New Mexico stateline, the Texas Department of Transportation reported.
The Texas Department of Transportation in El Paso tweeted: “We don’t close roads: crashes close roads. STAY PUT to avoid getting stranded.”
Trans Mountain Road in El Paso and the San Augustine Pass in Doña Ana County were closed Sunday morning.
Due to hazardous driving conditions, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office also closed Eastlake Boulevard northbound from Gateway West Boulevard and Montana Avenue near Hueco Tanks.
In New Mexico, travel was also “highly discouraged” due to slick and snow packed roads across the state, the National Weather Service in Albuquerque said in a tweet.
